What I have learned…
Throughout this semester, we have touched on oh so many important things, and I am more prepared to take on a classroom than ever before! We’ve looked at standards, and learned about standards that I did not even know existed (i.e.Health Standards) and then made lessons that I can take directly into a classroom with me. I got to look at tons of fun P.E. activities that I can teach my future class, and we practiced adapting all of these lessons in order to make them work for whatever students we will have in our classroom.
As a multi-subject teacher, we are required to wear all of the hats from english to physical education. This class gave us an opportunity to look at the often overlooked portions of being an elementary educator and the nuances that go into that.
Most importantly, we looked at the special education laws and how we can a) help them in our classrooms and b) become an advocate and fight for these students and their parents with the law on our side. Knowing these is really important so that a) I, as a teacher, do not get in trouble and b) so that my students get the care that they deserve.
I am excited to take my new skills and lessons into the classroom next semester, and to forever look at a lesson and think about how I can UDL-ify it to make it better and more applicable for all students.
I really enjoyed this class, and felt like I learned a lot! Part of me wishes that this was an in person class, because it would have made everything we learned even more meaningful, but with the way our schedule in the credential program is, I would have dreaded having two late night classes. Because of this, I think the online was very helpful.
Health Lesson Plans
The Rings of Responsibility
This lesson can be very encompassing and teaches students the joys of responsibility. Yay responsibility!!!!
Quit Calling Me a Monster!
A very important lesson that students need to be taught about empathy and how to express their feelings to others.
Healthy & Unhealthy Foods
Familiarizing students with foods that are healthy at an early age is so important to help create life-long good habits!
Personal Hygiene—Hand Washing
Students get to learn why it is so important to wash their hands, and how it makes them healthier!
P.E. Lesson Plans
And Freeze!
I like this activity because it can be used from K-5 with some minor adaptations! Having a game like this up your sleeve can help keep any teacher in a pinch!
Follow the Loco-Leader
Students always get super excited to be the leader! They all get their heart-rates up, and get to practice their locomotor skills and non-locomotor skills. It’s a win-win-win all around!
Pathway Racers
it is a good way to incorporate math into P.E. and allows for students to get their wiggles out in an educational setting.
Tic-Tac-Toss
Throwing is often over-looked in the world, but it is a skill that children (and adults) desperately need. So let’s teach them how to do it in a low stakes, fun environment!
